What is a seed phrase and how does it work?

A seed phrase, also known as a recovery phrase, is a sequence of words used to generate a cryptocurrency wallet. It serves as a backup mechanism for accessing a cryptocurrency wallet's private keys and addresses.

By entering the seed phrase into a compatible wallet application, users can recreate the private keys and public addresses associated with their wallet and regain access to their cryptocurrency. 

How seed phrases work

1. Generation: Users are typically prompted to generate a seed phrase when setting up a cryptocurrency wallet. The phrase is randomly generated and consists of a series of 12 to 24 words chosen from a predefined list. Each cryptocurrency wallet has one seed phrase associated with it and it's used to generate the wallet's private key.

2. Backup: Once generated, the seed phrase is displayed to the user, who is instructed to write it down and store it in a safe location. The phrase is critical for accessing and restoring the wallet in case of loss, damage or theft of the device where the wallet is installed.

3. Recovery: If the device containing the wallet is inaccessible for any reason, the user can use the seed phrase to recover their wallet and access their funds. By entering it into a compatible cryptocurrency wallet application or hardware wallet device, the user can regenerate the wallet's private keys and addresses. This restores access to their cryptocurrency holdings.

4. Security: Anyone who gains access to a seed phrase can access the funds stored in the cryptocurrency wallet. Users are advised to store it in a physically secure location, such as a safety deposit box, and to refrain from sharing it with anyone else. Compromised seed phrases can unfortunately lead to users losing access to some or all of their funds.
